Daniel Strong Godfrey (b. 1949) received B.A. and M.M. degrees in composition from Yale University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Music at Northeastern University's College of Arts, Media and Design. Previously, he served at various times as Professor of Composition, Composer-in-Residence, Director of the School of Music, and Chair of Composition at Syracuse University's Setnor School of Music. He has also held visiting faculty appointments at the Eastman School of Music, the Indiana University School of Music, and the University of Pittsburgh.

On Saturday, June 25, the Cassatt String Quartet and guitar virtuoso Eliot Fisk will premiere a new Godfrey Quintet for guitar and strings at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. This will become one of three quintets on an upcoming recording with the Cassatt Quartet, including one for strings and piano (with Ursula Oppens) and one for quartet and a second cello (with Nicole Johnson).
In mid-July, Godfrey will again serve as co-director of the Seal Bay Festival, which he founded in the mid-nineties. The 2022 festival features American Chamber Music, with performances this summer in Vinalhaven, Belfast, Brunswick, Portland and Ogunquit, Maine. Participating composers will include Vineet Shinde, Shirish Korde, Nina Shekar, Brianna Lawren Ware, Dylan Schneider, and Daniel S. Godfrey. Performers will include guitarist Eliot Fisk, pianist Lily Funahashi, bassist Peter Weizner, trombonist Arthur Baron, and the Cassatt String Quartet.
